Harbour Flies Conservation Efforts

We believe that this entire world works in a big chain reaction. Therefore we like to pick out the small things we can do that will have an impact on a broader spectrum of things. One immensely important thing we can teach people is how to make their own impact, below we will explain:

Plastic affects the ocean in far too many ways. Everyone knows about it killing most species when they eat it or get caught up in it, but there are many other things that people do not fully think through. Phytoplankton is the worlds leading producer of oxygen, yet us throwing plastic in the water depletes the amount of phytoplankton producing it. Phytoplankton is destroyed by plastic in the water considering it either attaches to the plastic and gets destroyed by the plastics oils and bacteria, or the plastic blocks sunlight which these phytoplankton depend on for their photosynthesis. With mass amounts of plastic in the ocean, in some cases masses bigger than Texas, we are losing phytoplankton constantly.

What can you do?

We believe that the best thing you can do is pick up garbage, when we fish, we always wear a mesh bag around our belt, which we fill every day. It is a great feeling to look down and see all of the garbage you took out of the environment daily. One of the worst plastics for ocean species are nets. If you find a net on a beach, it is a necessity that you get rid of it considering every ocean species can get stuck in them. And lastly always remember to reuse or recycle your trash.

Donations

Where can you donate?

https://www.savethesound.org   is an organization which spreads awareness about the Long Island Sound and the problems it faces, they use donations to teach everyone about the condition our waters are in.

https://www.keepfishwet.org is an organization which shows anglers how to treat fish correctly, it is very important that everyone knows how to treat fish gently and safely therefore this is a great fund to donate to.

Yourself: Buy a reusable water bottle, buy reusable utensils, get a recycling bin that you can throw trash in, there is no point in donating to funds if you have not done small steps like these yourself.

Pack of Fish

Follow The Rules

The rules presented by fishing regulations are important to know when fishing because there are so many species that get tons of help from the rules, for example if you kill a Striped Bass over 35 inches, chances are it is a female who can be carrying eggs. Killing that one fish is killing hundreds if not thousands of stripers that can be roaming the seas. Then again we disagree with these regulations as we believe striped bass should be a trophy fish (a fish you cannot kill). We make all of our products so they benefit striped bass, and advise you use barbless hooks, never use treble hooks, rarely take the fish out of the water, and make sure to release the fish in a proper manner.

SALT UNTOLD

SALT UNTOLD is our method of expressing the lives affected by human counteractions surrounding our waters. In salt untold we go on journeys in which we find salt surrounding wildlife and express their lifestyles and the way our people have interfered with what they do. We sell prints and files in which we donate money to charities that surround these animals, and each picture has a story and sometimes film that expresses what led to the picture taken. Our job is to speak for the species who cannot speak for themselves and attempt to help them through morals or in some cases, law. You can check out our Instagram @saltuntold and see some of our work.
